So I am 100% a self-identified nerd, and I am not ashamed to say it. This section will be dedicated to all my favourite nerdy things, so this post will be a little overview for you about what I’m interested. Maybe you have some similar interests, or maybe you’ll be inspired to look into something new.

Books

Of course I had to start with my first and greatest love. Reading has been my favourite hobby since I was a teensy little kid, and I still adore it. I can’t say I have a favourite genre or even book series – there are too many incredible different kinds of literature out there.

Lately, I have been working on expanding my reading horizons, so I’ve been working my way through some European classics, and more ‘world literature’. I want to write more about those two ideas later, but if that is not your thing, never fear – I’m also a huge fantasy, sci-fi, and YA reader too.

A good book to me has unforgettable and strong characters, not necessarily good or evil, but incredibly complex. It is also multi-layered, where I can read it for enjoyment, and have my mind blown later as I read the analyses and interpretations people have. I like well-thought out worlds, and intelligent storylines, and most of all, so if that sounds like something you’d enjoy, hopefully we can share some good recommendations.

Comics

I admit that I haven’t been reading them as much lately, but I am a massive comic book fan, and my collection is still growing. Comics are such a fun medium to read, and I have a few favourite characters and stories that I love coming back to. If you’ve never tried reading comics before, or you’re a bit daunted like I was when I first started out – don’t worry! When I started out, I had no idea how to navigate the huge world of comics, so hopefully I can inspire you to give them a go.

If you’re already a fan however, I’m so glad you’re here. Personally, I love reading DC comics, especially Batman and his family of crime-fighting vigilante’s. I have a few Justice League comics, as well as Superman and Wonder Woman, but there are truly so many amazing characters out there – I’m still working my way through. Recently, I started reading some Darth Vader comics as well, which were amazing!

Film and Television

I put this category last because it is probably the one I will discuss the least. I typically don’t watch too many shows or films, as I prefer to spend the time reading or writing, but I am again looking to expand my horizons.

That said, when I do watch things, I like to really think about them. Though there are some shows or movies that are purely for entertainment purposes and little else, I believe there is something so intentional about creating art. In film, everything is chosen for important visual reasons, whether it be to contrast a set of colours, highlight something else, or advance the story in some way, by telling us something about the character or their world. Even when a creator doesn’t do something intentionally, their subconscious decisions can also tell us a lot about what is really going on.

It isn’t everyone’s thing, and it can be really exhausting at times, but I enjoy it, so hopefully you might too.
