It’s that time of the year again when the holiday rush begins, and if you’re struggling to find something for the writer in your life then you’re in the right place!

Writers are busy people who always have an idea or two buzzing around in their mind – whether or not they are actually writing them down might be another story however. With that in mind, this article will give you a handful of gift ideas at various price ranges so that you can show your writer the love they deserve this holiday.

Let’s begin!

We’ll start off with some more budget friendly items…

—A leather-bound journal with a twist!

Whether your writer friend already has a number of journals (or sheets of random paper that they swear are important), this is an excellent gift idea for writers of all ages and abilities.

Take it to the next level by coupling it with a nice pen and a personalised quote or letter in the first page to really show your writer how much you love them. (Tip: share what you love about their writing, or give them some encouragement in your letter, so that they will always pick up the book fondly!)

—Helpful Books!

Of course the last thing we want to do is distract our writers from their writing, so instead of buying them more books to get lost in, try giving them books that teach how to be a better writer.

Most writers will appreciate the thoughtfulness, as they may not be inclined to invest in their own growth this way. Be warned though, there is always the chance that they might take offence, so be careful!

—Candles or scents for their writing room

One of the best ways to get in the zone and signal that it is time to work is by creating a productive environment. No matter where your writer likes to work, if they have their trusty candle with them, they can signal to their mind that it is time to write!

Pick something they like by seeing what fragrances they already wear or gravitate to, and if in doubt, try to pick something soothing and gentle – vanilla or flowery scents like rose are always popular.

—Tea or Coffee tasting kits

This is another great way to get your writer something thoughtful and useful. Everyone loves a nice drink while they work, so pick a tasting kit that they can try out. There are plenty to try out there, and I’m sure that they’ll find something they like.

—Mugs and coasters

Cute themed mugs are everywhere, and they are always such a fun way to brighten someone’s day.

If you want to go a step further, buy a matching coaster or teacup and saucer set that will really elevate their experience.

—Sweets and goodies

One can absolutely never go wrong with chocolates and sweets for a gift. If you aren’t sure what their favourites are, tasting packs are always a safe bet.

If you do know what flavours they usually like however, look for ways to change it up slightly. Personally, I love watermelon-flavoured lollies, so my family bought me a pretty pack of hard-candies that I had never tried before. It was a nice way to try the flavour I liked in a different format, and find a new brand that I loved.

Not a sweet fan? Cheese boards and savoury food packs are another great way to go. In most department stores you’ll be able to find packs of jams, chutneys, and new flavoured spreads to try out on a savoury food board.

—Gift cards

Always a safe bet, these may be a good way to offer your writer the chance to spend money on something that they will truly love.

It could be to a local bookstore, a restaurant or cafe, a store they love, or to something like an educational course. There are so many possibilities, and no matter what you choose it will certainly bring them joy.

Looking for something a little higher in price? We’ve got that too:

—Fountain pen

These are thoughtful and elegant gifts that will elevate your the writing experience for any writer. Couple it with the personalised journal to create a really beautiful and memorable gift.

—Office accessories

This is a broad one for good reason – what do you think your writer could use the most?

For decoration: you could try getting them a sculpture, plant, colourful lamp, stack of antique books, or perhaps a lovely picture frame with the two of you.

For function: try looking for ergonomic items that may bring them comfort while writing, such as a chair cushion, foot rest, mouse pad, arm rest, or laptop stand.

—Alcohol

For your adult writers, find a drink that they love or that they could try out for the first time.

This ‘Writers tears’ whiskey could be a funny option, or get them a drink that you can use to try making cocktails with. There is a plethora of fictional character themed cocktails out in the world, such as these Harry Potter and Game of Thrones themed ones. Perhaps you could even come up with a cocktail befitting your writers protagonist!

—Pyjamas

Once again, your writer may be hesitant to spend much money on their own self care, so this is your chance to care for them.

Find a comfortable and luxurious set of pyjama’s so that they can relax in style while they dream about their writing!

For those of you who are looking to go above and beyond entirely, here are some other options that are on the pricier side:

—Headphones

These latest pair from beats are all the rage right now, but be mindful of what your writer friend already likes and uses. Try not to buy a large and bulky set if they much prefer their small AirPods.

Noise-cancelling headphones are best as they will help your writer to get into the zone and block out distractions.

—Photoshoot

Every author and writer needs a professional looking headshot to win them credibility and get them into the writing world.

Of course, it’s also good fun to get some nice photos taken and feel like a model for a day!

—Writing course

Similar to the offer of buying them writing books, this will certainly give your writer the opportunity to learn some new skills and meet some new people.

However, I should caution you that this isn’t for everyone, as they may not be able to take time away from work or study to attend the course. Additionally, you also run the risk of offending them, but if they have previously mentioned wanting to learn more or try a course – then go for it!

—A writing retreat or a weekend away

Pay for your writer to take some time away from the world to relax, recharge, and disconnect so they can get in some much needed focus time.

You could rent a hotel room for a few nights or send them on a pre-planned retreat or cruise so they can go somewhere new and get the ideas flowing.

And there you have it, a handful of gift ideas that may just light the creative spark in your writers once more! Happy holidays to all!
