Sometimes you need a quote like that to kick you into gear. Let go or be dragged. A good proverb and a better warning.

Think about it. You wouldn’t fall off a horse and cling to the reins as it runs away. You wouldn’t try to hold onto a speeding car/bus/train. You wouldn’t fall off a wakeboard and cling to the rope handle as it drags you through the water.

You could be cut to pieces dragging your body on the ground, break bones, or almost drown if you were to do so in these examples.

Graphic images yes, but they prove the point. If you don’t let go of things in the right time, you’ll be dragged along after them. It’s easier to think about this in terms of these physical instances, but what about the more abstract or less obvious choices in our lives?

What relationships are you clinging to, even as you’re being dragged along?

What work or job are you holding onto?

What bad habits have you refused to let go of?

What memories, unforgiveness, and bitterness still colours your perception?

I can confidently say that I am clinging to plenty of things that I shouldn’t—and boy am I getting dragged.

As always, the first step to changing anything like this is recognising it. Then, and only once you’ve been honest with yourself about this, you can begin taking action to change those things.

It’s scary, and right now I do feel like I’m at a cross-roads. Everything I want is on the other side of a few specific actions, but it’s going to take a lot of courage (and a bit of luck) to get there. That’s not easy, especially because I have no guarantee that any of this will work out.

For instance, while my job is decent, there are a lot of things about it which don’t fit the version of myself that I want to be. When I imagine the life of my dreams, it involves leaving this role at some point. However, there are a lot of fears, pressures, and other people’s opinions which are keeping me stuck in place. For someone who is trying to let go of those things and make bold decisions, it’s a bit disappointing to feel so stuck—and to know that regardless of the pressures, I am choosing to stay in this position (for now).

Like most people, I would love to work for myself, and in this digital age I can see that its genuinely possible to do so. Unfortunately, I am not really sure where to start. Usually I am pretty good at just trying something to get the ball rolling, but I haven’t had much success yet at my projects.

Only recently have I started to take my blog seriously, and I have my gripes with social media that may be holding me back on my Instagram journey (why do I have to have so many morals). Anyway, diagnosing the issue is the first step to working on a cure. The things I want to achieve and do take a lot of time, and honestly the competition is thick these days! There’s no excuse to give up though, when there is so much to play for. So let’s go and let go!
